With $2 billion in assets to manage at Lord Baltimore Capital Corporation, Mike Burns has a very basic IT need—an uninterrupted connection for a continual flow of information. "It is vitally important for us to be connected to one another and to banks, investment houses and the markets," Burns said.
But as controller for the privately held Baltimore investment management firm, Burns had a connection problem. Tired of "getting blindsided" by server outages, he moved the company into DocuTech's Connected Care program.
Burns explained he turned to Connected Care because the company kept having issues with servers going down. "They might go down on a Friday night and we wouldn't find out about it until Sunday or Monday. I was tired of coming in on Monday morning and getting blindsided," he said.
Eighteen months later, Burns is enthusiastic. "The managed services program has been excellent. We are way over 99 percent up," said Burns.

Under Connected Care, DocuTech monitors the servers, sensing when potential problems arise and correcting issues to keep Lord Baltimore's IT systems fully operational. Burns appreciates the peace of mind and the fact he does not need to spend internal resources on monitoring or fixing IT problems. Network components include a mail server, file server, SQL server, Citrix server, net management server, and Blackberry enterprise server.
A DocuTech customer for 10 years, Lord Baltimore also utilizes a backup and disaster recovery system hosted by DocuTech. This service replicates the Lord Baltimore IT systems every day, creating a mirror image of the servers to guard against potential loss of data. The Blackberry server utilizes a dual redundant system with link load balancers to redirect communications if one goes down.
"We have to be connected to be viable and to grow our business. We need a continual flow of information. The managed services program enables us to do just that," Burns said.

Ahead of the Curve: Security and Threats
Trusting your IT systems to DocuTech means our experts stay current with fast-breaking advances and understand how to apply new technologies to your specific situation. We are constantly searching for innovations to improve IT operations and evaluating new processes; right now, network security is a major technology issue in our sights.
Security and threat management are becoming multi dimensional. Attacks on operating systems, applications, viruses, and malwares have long been a source of these threats. Until now, each of these threats has been addressed with separate components and processes. But today, there are emerging technologies that look at each threat individually, but combine the management of these threats into a single centrally managed solution. DocuTech is evaluating a few of these products to determine their effectiveness and compatibility with existing applications and system configurations. As our findings become available, we will let you know if these technologies make sense for you, our customers.
